Life First, Business Second: A New Path to Freedom
Ever feel like you’re running in circles, chasing the perfect business plan to unlock your freedom? I know I did. I used to think if I hit the right targets and landed the perfect client, life would finally align with my dreams.
But it didn’t work out that way. Instead of freedom, I found stress. My supposed “success” arrived handcuffed to late-night emails, weekends on calls, and the sinking realization that I’d become my own worst boss.
And that’s when it hit me: A business doesn’t automatically grant you the life you crave.

Shifting Perspectives
Most of us are taught to build our businesses first, squeezing life in whenever possible. There’s always another project, another “big opportunity,” or another crisis to handle. It’s like wearing shoes two sizes too small, hoping they’ll magically fit one day.
But what if we flipped the script? What if we designed our life first, paying attention to the not-so-glamorous but deeply meaningful moments?
What do you want your Tuesday afternoons to feel like? Who do you want around your dinner table? What nourishes you in the quiet between work and rest?
These answers are more crucial than any financial target. When you focus on the life you want, your business becomes a tool to support it—not a treadmill to escape.
Discovering Your Vision
Here’s what worked for me:
- I penned my anti-vision—no commutes, no tedious Zoom meetings, no false urgencies.
- Then, I shaped my vision—leisurely mornings, creative work sessions, long walks, and treasures like cherished time for friends.
This vision became my guide. Instead of chasing every shiny business model, I began asking, Does this bring me closer to that life, or pull me away?
Crafting the Perfect Business Model
Let me share a secret: Almost any business model can be profitable. The challenge is finding one that aligns with your life.
- Passionate about writing? Consider newsletters or digital products.
- Enjoy working with people but despise red tape? Opt for solo consulting projects.
- Value your time over scaling up? Choose models that don’t rely on endless meetings or managing large teams.
Remember: The business is merely the container. Your life is the liquid. Shape the container to fit your life—not the other way around.
A Practical Exercise
Tonight, give this a whirl:
- Note down your anti-vision—recognize what you no longer wish to tolerate.
- Sketch your perfect day—with vivid, ordinary details.
- Reflect: what’s the simplest business model that supports this vision?
Remember, it’s not about complication but creating a blueprint that resonates with you.
Final Thoughts
The world often screams for bigger, faster, more. Yet, the goal isn’t to build a business for boasting. The aim is to construct a life that’s truly fulfilling.
So, always prioritize: life first, business second.
