Why Learning Something New Doesn’t Have to Feel Like Homework
—
Once upon a time, I thought learning was something you finished.
School, college, a few years of pretending to read management books - and then you’re done. All that’s left is trivia, pub quizzes, and yelling at the telly.
But lately, I’ve found myself getting curious again.
Not in a noble, scholarly way. Just… wondering things.
Like:
Why are some birds such show-offs?
How does compost actually work?
And what’s the difference between a nebula and a galaxy - really?
The trouble is, when you go looking for answers online, you’re either:
Talked down to,
Bored stiff, or
Hit with a video called “How I Mastered Quantum Physics in 3 Days 💥💯🔥” (which I refuse to click on out of principle).
That’s where the robot comes in.
The Joy of Asking Without Feeling Silly
The first time I asked ChatGPT to explain something, I was slightly embarrassed. It felt like cheating. Or worse - admitting I didn’t know something basic.
But then I remembered something very important:
No one’s watching.
So I typed:
“Explain the basics of climate change. Use plain English. No jargon.”
It did.
Then I asked about whisky regions.
Then how lighthouses work.
Then the history of potatoes (don’t judge).
And every time, it came back with clear, calm answers. No ego. No assumption I already knew the difference between El Niño and La Niña (still working on that).
Learning Without the Luggage
What struck me most wasn’t the information - it was the feeling.
I didn’t feel slow. I didn’t feel “past it.”
I felt… curious. Energised. In control.
No tests. No homework. Just the kind of learning you do when no one’s marking you - the best kind.
It reminded me of being 10 years old in the library, picking up a random book about volcanoes because the cover looked exciting.
Only now, I don’t even have to leave the sofa.
Try It Yourself
Here’s a good prompt to start with:
“Explain [topic] in plain English, as if I’m completely new to it. Make it interesting but easy to follow.”
You can ask about anything:
How submarines stay underwater.
What mindfulness actually is.
Why pigeons always look so guilty.
The robot doesn’t care what you ask. It doesn’t sigh or check its watch. It just answers.
And No, You’re Not Too Old
There’s a daft idea floating around that learning new things after 60 is either:
Impressive (how brave!), or
Pointless (what’s the use?)
To both, I say: rubbish.
Learning isn’t about degrees or certificates. It’s about staying alive upstairs.
It’s about being the sort of person who asks “Why’s that, then?” long after everyone else has stopped wondering.
AI just makes it easier to keep asking.
Final Thought
You don’t have to “go back to school.” You just have to stay curious.
And now, you’ve got a tool that can teach you anything… without ever handing you homework.
Curious minds, welcome here.
I write weekly pieces for grown-ups who still like asking questions - and don’t want to be patronised in the process.
