Beginnings Are Hard

(But Here We Go)

Well, here we are — the first post of The Old Grey Thinker. That blinking cursor on a blank page really does stare back at you, doesn’t it?

But if I’m going to explore how to keep my brain sharp after 50, might as well start by battling the blank page!

🧠 Why this, why now?

I’m at that point — like many of you — where I’ve started thinking more seriously about staying mentally sharp, curious, and happy as I get older.

And I’ve got a fantastic role model: my dad, who’s 92 and bright as a button.

Why? I’m convinced it’s because he exercises his brain every single day:

  • He uses his iPhone, iPad, and PC daily

  • Watches YouTube to dive into things from his past, follow the news, and explore new interests

  • Documents his life and manages it all on his computer

  • Learns songs for the local choir he sings in

His mind is busy — and that, I believe, is the real key to staying sharp and well as we age.

As I move into retirement myself, I’ve realised how crucial it is to keep the brain moving — not with hard work, but with curiosity, fun, and connection.

So, The Old Grey Thinker was born. I’m not an expert. I’m a fellow explorer, figuring it out like you — and sharing what works (and what doesn’t) along the way.

🤝 What kind of community is this?

This is our space:

  • Curious minds 50+

  • People who want simple, science-backed ideas to stay sharp — with no mumbo jumbo

  • Folks who appreciate a bit of humour (think Horrible Histories meets brain science)

My goal? A friendly, down-to-earth place where we try things out together.
