Are We Really Too Old to Be Tech-Savvy?
Sitting here with a steaming cup of tea, legs comfortably stretched, I ponder a modern paradox. My grandfather had likely already shuffled off this mortal coil by this age, worn out from his backbreaking work. Meanwhile, here I am in my armchair, sprightly for 67, engaging the digital world without so much as leaving my sofa.
The money I squirreled away over the years, however, falls short of sustaining the leisurely retirement I envisaged.
My notion of supplementing it with a bit of taxi-driving or package hauling was quickly dismissed — not my cup of tea, too much interaction involved. Now, the idea of digital earnings, that’s more like it.

There’s a peculiar charm in discovering how a laptop and a bit of curiosity can unlock earning potential from home. One needn’t be a coding whizz or social media influencer. Far from it, my tools of choice are wit and words. Writing articles or creating online courses isn’t bad for a retirement gig, wouldn’t you say? Why not cash in on decades of accumulated stories and wisdom?
The beauty of this digital transformation isn’t just the income, but the independence it bestows. Crafting a piece, publishing online, and voila — you’re not only relevant, but contributing, sharing, engaging. It’s like finding a new lease of life, quite literally from the comfort of our beloved armchairs.
Tech, often blamed for shortening attention spans, promises an alternative way of life for folks like us. There is, however, this niggling doubt: is it all just smoke and mirrors, or can one truly navigate this modern landscape for real gains? I’ve found that challenging conventional wisdom opens doors to options our ancestors couldn’t dream of. Gone are the days of equating age with obsolescence.
Of course, the sceptic in me stirs occasionally. Embracing newfangled tech doesn’t come without its hiccups. The odd glitch or learning curve inevitably raises the blood pressure. Yet, if I can figure out how to brew a perfect pot of tea, surely, mastering online nuances isn’t far off. It calls for patience — much like finding comfort in a slowly steeped brew.
Many of us have lived long enough to remember the significance of postcards, not WhatsApp. We’ve witnessed vinyl warp into streaming and seen yellow pages fade into memory. It’s no surprise, then, that we possess the adaptability required to thrive in this digital hustle. Change won’t wait for permission, but it does offer perspective — an invitation to explore fresh avenues.
Therefore, seasoned friends, rather than letting technology bypass us, let’s embrace it. Our experiences give us a unique edge, and technology provides the tools to wield it powerfully.
Let the world be our oyster, and, conveniently, our internet connection the pearl within. Curious to learn more? Pop the kettle on and subscribe to The Old Grey Thinker on Substack — musings, moans, and occasional grains of wisdom from an unwilling retiree: https://linkly.link/2EZnM.
